One of the biggest misconceptions about braces is that you cannot chew gum if you get braces which in fact, sugar free gum is completely safe. We recommend when you first get your braces put on to chew sugar free gum because it can actually help with discomfort while your teeth start shifting. The difference between sugar free gum and regular sugary double bubble gum is that it doesn’t coat your teeth and brackets with sugar which can cause cavities. Sugar free gum is not as sticky as other types of gum which lessens your chance of getting the gum stuck in your wires and brackets. S0 next time someone offers you some gum double check to see if it’s sugar free and ENJOY!
